The Sounds on the
Susquehanna, Inc. is a non-profit corporation formed to foster and
promote the drum and bugle corps activity in the Southern Tier of
New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Created in 1989, the
Sounds on the Susquehanna sponsors an annual competition showcasing
some of the finest drum and bugle corps from around the country.
Initially, these annual competitions featured Junior corps,
consisting of young adults from ages 14 to 22. The corps engage in
an extensive touring schedule each summer, from mid-June to
mid-August, culminating in the annual World Championships. These
corps spend the summer traveling from city to city, performing in
stadiums much like the one in Endicott, as many as 5 nights per
week.
In 1997, the Sounds on the Susquehanna added a second show for the
drum corps fans of the Twin Tiers. The Senior Sounds on the
Susquehanna features the best of the Senior corps from around the
Northeastern part of the US. Senior corps perform the same type of
exciting field musical performances ad the Junior corps, but their
membership is made up primarily of working men and women who have
"aged out" of the Junior corps ranks or who can't take the summer
off to perform the rigors of the Junior corps tour.
The Sounds on the Susquehanna supports the community by providing
free tickets to various local organizations, including several of
the area's Senior Living Centers and the Broome Developmental
Center. Currently, work is underway to establish a "scholarship"
fund for those young adults seeking to raise funds to join a Junior
drum corps.
